Chapter 489 After their stroll, they returned to the car.

Victor lounged in the driver's seat, looking relaxed and slightly overheated. He'd undone two buttons on his shirt sleeves, and his hand rested lazily on the wheel. With a sidelong glance, he drawled, "Ready to go hnow, Mrs. Fitzgerald?" His words jogged Isadora's memory. She glanced at him, her tone layered with meaning. "Which home?" Victor arched an eyebrow, not quite following her line of questioning.

She was thinking of that photo-the one taken at the Fitzgerald estate.

Victor seemed determined not to spoil the rare, easy mood between them by stumbling into a trap of his own making.

"Your place," he answered.

Isadora shot him a look. At least he knew when to play it safe.

Just as Victor started the engine, foot hovering over the gas, Isadora broke the silence. "Can we make one more stop?" Victor shifted his grip on the wheel, his gaze flicking from his watch to her. "Where to?" Isadora's eyes sparkled. "Can we go back to that hilltop you once tookto?" Victor clicked his tongue. "What's this-feeling nostalgic with me?" She rolled her eyes. "I heard there's going to be a meteor shower tonight, between ten and midnight. That spot has the best view." The words had barely left her lips before Victor's mouth curled into a sly, ambiguous smile.

Isadora suddenly remembered that night on the hilltop-making a wish under the stars. He'd called her naïve, even accused her of being ungrateful. Back then, she didn't really understand what he meant.

Now, looking back, it was obvious-he'd been jealous, even then.

Embarrassment crept up on her, and she snapped, "Well? Are you coming or not?" Victor glanced over, his dark, lazy eyes catching the soft pink that had crept into her delicate ear. Without warning, he reached across the console and gently pinched her earlobe-warm, soft, startlingly hot to the touch.

A slow, amused grin spread across his lips. "Of course. If Mrs. Fitzgerald commands it, how could I possibly refuse?" So they found themselves back at that quiet, open hilltop.

Isadora remembered that night so clearly-Magnus Wainwright pulling Elise Harrison out of the pool, the e sting of laughter and ridicule from the others. Victor had swept her away, up here, as if he owned the world, wild and untamed as a stallion.

It was the first tshe'd ever felt so free. She couldn't say that was when she fell for him, but something changed inside her that night. Back then, she didn't understand the feeling. Looking back now, she realized it was warmth.

On the hilltop, the deep blue sky stretched overhead, studded with stars like scattered gemstones-so close it felt as if you could reach out and pluck them from the velve darkness. The air was crisp and fresh, tinged with the scent of earth. She took a few deep breaths, savoring it.

They leaned against the hood of the convertible, side by side, the city's lights and the vast, starry sky laid out before them like a living painting.

"Make a wish," Victor said.

"The meteors haven't appeared yet," she replied.

Victor laughed softly. "This time, letmake it ctrue for you-you don't need to wait for falling stars."

Isadora shot him a sidelong glance, her eyes shimmering. But she didn't make a wish this time. The thing she would have wished for was already right beside her. She only wanted to relive this moment, in this place.

After a while, she rested her head gently on his shoulder.

Victor felt the weight and warmth of her against him. He looked down, his om gaze dark and intense, studying her ark and delicate profile-her fair skin, luminous eyes, and lips as soft and pink as rose petals. A fierce longing surged inside him to kiss her deeply, to leave his mark on her, to keep her forever entwined with his very soul.

But Victor reined himself in, desire held in check. Even now, with a baby on the way he wanted to give Isadora something more-something sacred. Tomorrow, he was going to propose to the woman he'd loved for so many years.
